Spiranthes cernua, the fragrant Spiranthes is a terrestrial orchid of temperate climate. It is native to North America. It grows in cool to humid environments, ditches, riverbanks, marshes, bogs, wet lawns.... It is a terrestrial orchid relatively tolerant on its growing medium, one of the easiest to maintain in culture.
The rosettes of foliage are topped by upright stems bearing pure white flowers with a delicate vanilla scent that last for a very long time. Ideal for bouquets of fresh flowers.
The flowers appear at the end of summer or in autumn. They are spike-shaped, singularly arranged in a long (30 to 50 cm) regular spiral, very aesthetic.

Plantation
The fragrant spiranthes is easy to grow, as it is very tolerant. It can be planted in the garden at any time of the year in moist to cool soil: on the emergent bank of a pond, in a peat bog, a marsh, an undergrowth that keeps cool all year round, as well as in a wide and deep pot placed in a water bowl. The water level can rise to a third of the pot.
It supports soils from very acidic peat-based, to slightly alkaline. For good growth, it is best to offer it a slightly richer soil than pure, slightly humus-bearing peat.
It particularly likes sunny exposure or half-shade in very hot climates. Its flowering is late, sometimes lasting until November.
Removing the deflowered flower stems before the plant tires to produce its seeds forces it to put its energy instead into vegetative reproduction, i.e. the production of shoots.
Spiranthes cernua grows rapidly for an orchid: it is capable of producing new growth buds from its fleshy roots. The number of rosettes easily doubles each year.
Exposition
In the garden, the ideal place will be sunny or semi-shaded. It is important not to let the substrate dry out in the summer.
As the seasons go by...
During the winter, the plant persists in the form of a rhizome and a rosette of leaves.
