This substrate is suitable for summer-dormant species (Ophrys, Orchis, Himantoglossum, Anacamptis, Platanthera, Listera, etc.).
These species generally thrive in chalky or neutral soils that are low in organic matter and well drained (meadows, embankments, roadsides, etc.).
Our growing mix is made up mainly of mineral elements. It contains mainly (70-80%) a mixture of fine lava stone (pumice) and dolomite. Perlite (10-15%) is added to keep the soil light, and horticultural compost (maximum 10-15%).
Unlike other terrestrial orchids, these species have a summer dormancy; no vegetation is visible during the summer (June to September).
During this period, only a small rootless bulb (about 1.5 cm in diameter) remains in the pot. The new roots develop in autumn from the bulb at the same time as the new stems.
Keep the substrate dry to very slightly damp throughout the summer.
The first leaves (and roots) appear in autumn (October to November, depending on the species). Keep the substrate moist until flowering (April - May).
