Ophrys insectifera is a small Ophrys easily identified by its strongly three-lobed blackish-brown labellum and its dark, very fine petals.
Ophrys insectifera is found in most of Central Europe, including Scandinavia. However, it is very rare or absent from Mediterranean regions.
Flowering season: May to June (July at higher altitudes).
It is a slender plant, 20 to 50 cm high, bearing between 2 and 10 flowers.
This Ophrys is an example of mimicry with the pollinating insect (a hymenoptera of the Argogorytes genus) whose shape it imitates.
