Planting
This hardy perennial orchid can grow up to 1 metre in height and thrives in calcareous or neutral soils, poor in organic matter and well drained. Himantoglossum generally grows in drier places than Dactylorhiza, more often in open areas such as lawns, wastelands, meadows, slopes, forests...
Exposure
The ideal location is in the sun.
Throughout the seasons...
Unlike most other terrestrial orchids, Himantoglossum is characterised by summer dormancy; the new greyish-green leaves appear in autumn (October), persist through the winter and then wither at flowering. No vegetation is usually visible during the summer.
The inflorescence that appears from May onwards is cylindrical and quite dense. The numerous greenish flowers with purple edges have a very elongated labellum that can reach 6 cm.
This species is generally found in full light or semi-shade, on calcareous soils, in lawns, scrubland and open woods.
