The Spiranthes genus is widely distributed, stretching from North America to Asia and Australia.
Only 2 species are found in Europe. The Summer Spiranthes - Spiranthes aestivalis - flowers between June and August. The second, the Autumn Spiranthes - Spiranthes spiralis - is the latest, flowering between the end of August and October.
Unlike Spiranthes aestivalis, which grows in waterlogged soils (marshes, peat bogs), Spiranthes spiralis prefers dry soils (limestone lawns, coastal dunes, meadows) in full sunlight.
It is a discreet plant, 10 to 25 cm high, with small flowers grouped in a more or less dense spiral. They are white with a green wash.
