Pleione ‘Verdi ’ : always impressive…

Pleione ‘Verdi’ : always impressive…

Pleione ‘Verdi’ is a particularly vigorous selection of Pleione formosana. It has voluminous bulbs, each producing two or three flowers, which are an intense violet pink with red to dark red stripes and spots.

The stem of each flower is also surrounded by a dark red sheath, enhancing the beauty of this colourful variety still further.

Phytesia's Pleione ‘Verdi’ are supplied in one-litre pots. Each pot contains two to three bulbs and each bulb will produce two or three floral scapes.

Multiplying very quickly, the number of new bulbs generally grows threefold every year.

What should I do when I receive my Pleione orchids ?

Pleione are completely dormant during the winter, and only the bulbs remain. These must be kept dry.

In early spring, when the bulbs start to germinate, the substrate should be moistened slightly. Young Pleione shoots develop in March or April and flower during the spring.

After flowering, the plant continues to develop its foliage and the bulbs keep maturing. Note that after flowering the soil must not be allowed to dry out, as this is when new bulbs are produced for the following year.

Starting in September, the foliage begins to fade and then wither. From this point, you can stop watering completely and keep the plants dry throughout the winter.

Repotting and cultivating Pleione orchids

Over the years, the bulbs multiply to form larger and larger beds. If repotting becomes necessary, just take care not to cover the bulbs. The plant has above-ground bulbs that need to remain on the surface of the soil.

These orchids are very tolerant in terms of substrate. They are happy in a simple universal compost with the addition of about 20% lava rock. For optimum results, choose the Pleione-Bletilla substrate specially developed by Phytesia.

Frost resistance

Most Pleione are semi-hardy. They can withstand light frosts down to -10°C. These orchids cannot be kept in the garden in regions with harsh winters. At least in these regions, we recommend cultivating them in planters so that they can be kept away from heavy frosts during winter. Quite a wide pot (diameter 20 cm) should be selected to avoid restricting the growth of new bulbs at the edges.
