Pleione orchids
Pleione orchids are charming little flowers blooming in the spring which are fairly easy to grow for as long as your garden or balcony is protected. Although small, these orchids have very impressive flowers in terms of size (up to 15 cm) and colour.
There are around 20 species of Pleione orchids. These are terrestrial or epiphytic orchids of subtropical mountain climates, mainly found in the Himalayas, central Nepal, the mountainous regions of central and Eastern China as well the neighbouring countries of Southern Asia to Taiwan. There are also many hybrids.
Resistant to light frost…
Most Pleione orchids are semi-hardy. Since they tolerate light frosts only (-10°C), these orchids cannot be kept in the garden in regions where winter is harsh. It is recommended, at least in these areas, to grow them in a planter so they hibernate away from strong frosts. A large enough pot (20-cm diameter) should be selected in order not to hinder the development of new bulbs around the periphery.
Plant your Pleione orchid bulbs now…
During the winter, the Pleione orchids are fully dormant and only the bulbs persist. These must be kept dry and protected from severe frosts throughout the winter period.
In the early spring, when the bulbs begin to germinate, the substrate should be slightly moistened. The young shoots of Pleione orchids grow from March-April and bloom in spring.
After flowering, the plant continues the development of its foliage and the maturation of its bulbs. Beware: after flowering, it is essential not to let the soil dry out; this is when the bulb produces new bulbs for the following year.
Over the years, bulbs multiply to form larger and larger flowerbeds.
