Botanical rarities

The orchids in this category are extremely rare botanical varieties. Some of them are delicate plants that are less tolerant than the orchids in the 'Easy Garden' category. They are more suitable for a connoisseur audience...

A plant of the plains as well as of the mountains, the Fragrant Orchid generally grows in full light. It is a slender plant, 30 to 80 cm high, with a dense, elongated spike inflorescence bearing 30 to 80 small pink to purplish pink flowers.

Very tolerant and attractive, the fly orchid is one of our wild orchids that can be easily grown in the garden.

Planting

In the wild, Gymnadenia colonize a multitude of biotopes, but are generally found in open areas such as meadows, embankments, roadsides, mountainsides, forest edges, often linked to very fluctuating humidity conditions. This means that they are very adaptable. This plant requires a sunny to semi-shady exposure and accepts heavy or very calcareous soils as well as acidic soils.

In cultivation, it is advisable to use lava stone (pumice) or fine quartz to keep the soil light and well drained. We recommend adding a little potting soil with little organic matter or clay.

Exposure

The ideal location is sunny or semi-shaded.

Over the seasons...

The plant develops over the years, each tuber is renewed when the leaves wither in summer, sometimes accompanied by vegetative propagation (additional tubers). Over the years, the plant multiplies its number of rosettes and flower stems.
